What Does GRA Stand for?

The Georgia Redistricting Alliance is a coalition of non-profit, non-partisan organizations with the shared goal of ensuring transparency and fairness of the redistricting process in Georgia.   Our coalition strives to engage and educate citizens, work in partnership with our elected officials, and submit a fair, balanced map to the Georgia General Assembly.

Standards for Fair and equitable redistricting in Georgia

Ø No plan or district shall be drawn with the intent to favor or disfavor a political party or an incumbent.

Ø Districts shall not be drawn with the intent or result of denying or abridging the equal opportunity of minorities.

Ø Districts shall consist of contiguous territory; and to the extent feasible, districts shall be compact.

Ø Pursuant to the principle of “one person, one vote,” districts shall be as equal in population as possible.

Ø Where feasible, apportionment plans shall make use of existing city, county, and geographical boundaries, and similar communities of interest.

How Can I Get Involved?

How can you affect the process:

1.     Being knowledgeable about the process with our handy Redistricting Tool Kit.

2.     Attend a public hearing and let your elected officials hear from you!

3.     Submit comments to the Redistricting Committee via their website.

4.     Write or call your state senator and representative.

5.     Speak out to your neighbors, friends, co-workers and community groups about the impact of redistricting.

Wait… What do I say?

The public hearings held jointly by the Senate and House Redistricting Committees is your opportunity to talk about your community.   By defining your community to the committee they will have a better understanding of your district when they re-drawn the line.   Check out the Redistricting Tool Kit for examples.

Ø What bonds your community – what do you see as the common links in your community?

Ø Where is your community located – what are the boundaries of your community?

Ø Why should the community be kept together – or separate from another area?
